- Striker fired pistols are the most common in today’s market. These differ from hammer fired pistols in the sense that racking the slide partially cocks an internal spring that is fully cocked once the trigger is pulled. By the end of the trigger pull, the spring is released to allow the striker pin to hit the cartridge and fire the round. Some come with a thumb safety, a trigger safety, and/or a grip safety. HAMMER FIRED HANDGUNS
Both semi-automatic pistols and revolvers can have hammers.
Both semi-automatic pistols and revolvers can have hammers. Hammers may be external or internal. Hammer fired pistols can be classified with one of three types of trigger pulls: single action (SAO), double action (DAO), or single action/double action (SA/DA). The type of trigger pull action is based on how the trigger and hammer work together to make the firearm function. When the trigger is pulled, a spring rotates the hammer, hitting the firing pin, which hits the primer and fires the gun.
REVOLVERS
Revolvers are a very simple firearm to use.
- Revolvers are a very simple firearm to use. Sometimes, they are referred to as wheel guns. They have a revolving cylinder that holds the ammunition and a hammer to strike the firing pin. The cycle of operations of a revolver is simple; there are several chambers in the cylinder that align with the firing mechanism. Once the hammer hits the firing pin, the firing pin hits the primer and sends the bullet down range.
